With the rapid development of technology, Internet becomes an essential part in people's daily life. More and more search engine appears with more accurate search function and detailed information of search results. Advanced search engine is supposed to be a good thing to make Internet users more convenient. However, it seems like Chinese people often uses the search engine in a "different" way.
Recently, someone posted a picture on the Sina Weibo (same as Twitter in North American). The content in his twit is about how embarrassed he was when he found that a chinese people named Jinhao Ding left chinese characters of his name on the fresco in the egyptian pyramids. This twit has been reposted in a million times in one day. Most people are very angry about this man Jinhao Ding. They think this man embarrassed all chinese in front of the whole world. Soon, this Jinhao Ding is tracked down on the Internet by chinese “enthusiastic” net users. All information about Jinhao Ding and his parents is disclosed by more and more net users.
As a result, Jinhao Ding and his family's life are seriously affected. Under the pressure of billions of chinese net users, parents of Jinhao ding are forced to contact media and make a statement. Their statement is about how sorry they are that they didn't teach their son well and they seeek for billions of chinese net users' forgiveness. I don't agree with what Jinhao Ding has done. However, I think being hunted by billions of net users seems a little cruel to Jinhao Ding, especially when he is just a junior school student. It's hard for me to imagine how this "hunting" can do to his life and his future development.
For years, every day there will be one particular chinese people is being "hunted" by billions of net users because that they did something wrong and their behaviors were disclosed by net users. Many people's lives were seriously affected. Some people even have to change their identity to avoid the hunting and get a peaceful life. Does every one of them actually deserve this kind of treatment? I don't think so.
However, I have to admit we do have a source to find out what is really going on in China by search engine and net users. Chinese mainstream media won't report many things, especially when it comes to politics. Thanks for the "hunting" and disclosers, we are able to detect many corruptions and scandals. Recently, the Vice President of U.S. - Joe Biden - made a speech in University of Pennsylvania. What he said about China makes me feel very sad about my country. "China is a great nation, and we should hope for the continued expansion. But ladies and gentlemen, their problem are immense, and they lack much of what we have. We have the best universities in the world. We have a legal system that is open and fair. We have the most agile venture capital system in the world. We lead the world in innovation and technology. .... You cannot think different in a nation where you cannot breathe free. You cannot think different in a nation where you aren't able to challenge orthodoxy. Because change only comes from challenging orthodoxy. " (Joe Biden)
